API integration and diagnostics

I took full technical responsibility for an API integration backend, from studying contracts to decisions, implementation and verification. I also built the entire diagnostic interface to investigate the data’s path and failures, connecting integration development with the ability to explain its behavior.

Context

Integrating systems requires understanding data meaning as well as each contract’s boundaries. A successful response does not, by itself, describe the final state of an operation.

The diagram on this page was created for the portfolio: System A and System B use fictional data and an invented contract, separate from the professional experience.

Problem

Different models can represent similar concepts with different types, identifiers and rules. Transformation needs to make those differences explicit.

Timeouts and partial failures leave questions: did an operation fail to happen, or was its response lost? Repeating a call without understanding its effects can duplicate data.

My contribution

I was responsible for all technical work on the integration backend: studying contracts, defining mappings and implementing authentication, retrieval, transformation, submission and data verification.

I built the entire diagnostic interface for investigating records and failures. My authorship covers those components, not the systems the integration connects.

Technical criteria

I treated diagnostics as part of the integration solution: alongside implementing communication, I built an interface to make its behavior investigable. The problem required understanding what happened to data, beyond receiving a successful response.

My technical criterion is to distinguish submission, state confirmation and failure investigation. Idempotency and reconciliation help assess retries and differences between expected and observed state without assuming every operation can be repeated.

Alternatives and trade-offs

General criteria and technical analysis written for this portfolio.

  • Automatic retries can help with transient failures, but need limits and knowledge of the operation’s effect.
  • Diagnostics need enough context without turning logs into indiscriminate copies of sensitive data.

Application and examples

Independent demonstration: System A sends a note with a fictional identifier and text to System B. The drawing explains responsibilities without calling APIs.

  1. Invented contract

The example limits a record to an identifier and text. It contains no catalogues, rules or responses from professional services.

  2. Explicit mapping

Transformation separates the source model from the format accepted by the destination and allows fields to be validated before submission.

  3. Verification

A subsequent read can check the persisted value. The example illustrates the distinction between sending and confirming state.

  4. Diagnostics

The visual path identifies source, transformation and destination to make failure explanations more concrete.

Visualization

Invented educational contract: a note with identifier note-01 and text Hello leaves System A, passes through mapping and reaches System B. Cylinders represent persistence; the amber line represents read-back verification. The diagnostics block helps explain the path. Data, contract and drawing were created for the portfolio, without API calls or real results.

What this experience demonstrates

I implemented the integration backend and diagnostic interface, with technical responsibility from understanding through verification. My contribution included both connecting systems and providing tools to investigate failures.

The demonstration shows contract and verification concepts. It is not the professionally delivered tool or evidence of a real test.
