Wisetree: Rust tooling for organizing development work
I created Wisetree to organize work across branches while keeping track of each one. It combines a Rust and Ratatui terminal interface with commands to create worktrees, track changes and automate environment preparation.
Context
Git worktrees let developers keep several branches open in separate directories. This supports both people and coding agents working on parallel tasks.
Problem
Creating the directory is only part of the work. Each checkout may need local configuration, dependencies and setup commands; its state and pull requests then need tracking.
My responsibility
I created and develop Wisetree. The public repository contains its Rust implementation, documentation and tests.
Decision
Combining an interactive terminal interface with scriptable commands supports both manual operation and automation.
The dashboard brings Git state and pull request information together. Per-project configuration helps new worktrees start as usable environments.
Alternatives and trade-offs
Present-day analysis written for this site. It is not a record of the alternatives evaluated at the time.
- Automating Git operations requires visible effects, especially when deleting directories or branches. Local changes need consideration before destructive actions.
- Shared dependency caches reduce repeated setup but must respect each project’s configuration and isolation.
Implementation
Features documented in the public repository:
Terminal interface
Rust and Ratatui for navigating worktrees and tracking the state of work.
Environment preparation
Per-project setup for local configuration files, shared dependencies and setup commands.
Dashboard and GitHub
Visibility into local changes, branch differences and pull request state.
CLI and Shell integration
Commands and JSON output for integration with other development workflows.
Outcome
Wisetree is publicly available with code and documentation. It demonstrates my experience in Rust and building tools to organize engineering work.
